Street procession of Phuket Vegetarian Festival










Mah Song or entranced horses are devotees whom the gods enter during the festival. They manifest supernatural powers and perform self-tortures in order to shift evil from individuals onto themselves and to bring the community good luck.  There are two categories of Mah Song. One who having had an intimation of impending and another who specially chosen by the gods for their moral qualities. More information

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Vegetarian Festival in Phuket The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar and for nine days participants observe the following commitments:

  • Cleanliness of the body during the festival
  • Clean kitchen utensils not to be used by others who do not participate in the festival
  • Wear white during the festival
  • Behave physically and mentally
  • Avoid eating meat
  • Avoid sex
  • Avoid alcohol
  • People in mourning should not participate
  • Pregnant women and menstruating women should not attend ceremonies

Thai-Chinese resident in Phuket have long passed on the vegetarian festival to purify mind and soul by refraining from meat consumption and meditating. On the 6th day of the festival, there will be religious processions and incredible displays of face-and-body piercing. On the last day, there will be a “Koi Han” ceremony to exorcize ill fortune and a farewell ceremony for the deities at night.
